LETR Says Goodbye to A Fellow Torch Runner

It is with sadness that we share the passing of Dennis (Denny) H. Alldridge, former President and CEO of Special Olympics Wisconsin. Denny was a great friend, mentor, and fellow Torch Runner!

Denny served in this role from 1989-2016, and during this time, Special Olympics Wisconsin grew to be one of the leading programs in the world. In 2011, Denny was recognized as one of eight Special Olympics CEOs from around the world who were recognized as Legendary Leaders for demonstrating extraordinary vision and making significant impact and contributions to the growth of the Special Olympics movement.
Alldridge was well known for his great relationship with athletes and for understanding the importance of giving athletes opportunities to show the world how capable individuals with intellectual disabilities could be as leaders and advocates. Several athletes who could truly attest to his character and legacy spoke at his service on Sunday, 23 September.

Alldridge also left a lasting legacy of embracing the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics and understanding its importance to the mission of Special Olympics. Since 1989, Wisconsin’s Torch Run has raised more than $30 million.

While the Alldridges are deeply saddened as a family, they ask that you all just live life to the fullest and enjoy the loved ones around you.

We will miss you, Denny.

1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) Soldiers Host Special Olympics Powerlifting

The Soldiers arrived before 8 a.m. to set up for the event and prepare for the upcoming day. Throughout the day, they held three powerlifting events: the squat, the bench press, and the dead lift. The Soldiers acted as judges, spotters, weight rackers, scorekeepers, and most importantly, motivation and encouragement to the athletes.

The battalion started volunteering for the powerlifting competition three years ago and has been holding it ever since. “When I became command sergeant major four years ago, I took the opportunity to get our unit involved in this as our support to the local community,” said the 4th Battalion’s senior enlisted leader Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Klingenberg.

For each event, there were three judges surrounding the athletes as they competed. If the athlete had proper form and completed the lift correctly, the judges raised their white flag, signaling a successful lift. If the athletes had a violation while lifting, the red flags came up.

“Everybody here from 4th battalion is volunteering on their own time. No one was forced to come here,” Staff Sgt. Josiah Ingels said, a religious affairs non-commissioned officer. “This is coming from the overflow of kindness in people’s hearts. Just a way that 4th battalion and 1st group can give back to the community.” Read more here.
