The Chairman's Corner

I travelled to Adelaide, South Australia, in mid April to take part in the LETR Final Leg for the Special Olympics Australia National Games. Following a handover ceremony in Mildura, Victoria, where Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton handed the Flame of Hope to South Australia Police Commissioner Grant Stevens, LETR South Australia ran the torch through a number of rural towns before reaching Adelaide.

The highlight was the Torch Run on Monday, April 16, when over 100 police officers and athletes ran with the Flame of Hope from Police Headquarters to Government House bringing the streets of central Adelaide to a standstill. Later that day, the Flame of Hope entered Titanium Stadium during the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics Australia National Games, and the Games Cauldron was lit in the presence of Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and over 1000 athletes from around the country.

Congratulations to LETR South Australia on a job well done!

- Scott Whyte, Chair of the Law Enforcement Torch Run International Executive Council

Thank you to the Governor of South Australia, His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, for welcoming the Flame of Hope to Government House, Adelaide as part of the Final Leg.

Lava Flow Lights Special Olympics Hawaii Flame of Hope

On 10 April, members of the Hawaiʻi Police Department, the Honolulu Police Department, the US Coast Guard, and Special Olympics Hawaiʻi, made a 7-hour hike into Kalapana to find actively flowing lava, in order to light a special flame that will “help light the journey for Special Olympics Hawai’i athletes participating in this year’s State Summer Games.”

The special flame honors Special Olympics Hawai’i’s 50th anniversary which kicks off in July. Since 1968, police say Special Olympics has “helped change attitudes about the talents of people with intellectual disabilities, creating a more inclusive, welcoming world for all.”

Join us Friday, July 20 – Saturday, July 21 in Chicago as we celebrate Special Olympics 50th Anniversary! Activities during this celebration will include a Unified World CupGlobal Day of Inclusion, music concert, and the Commemorative Torch Run leading up to an Eternal Flame of Hope ceremony!

As part of this historic celebration, the Law Enforcement Torch Run will host a Commemorative Torch Run utilizing the Chicago Park District’s bike path that runs along Lake Michigan in downtown Chicago the morning of July 20. This is a structured run similar to a Final Leg, and participants have the option to run the entire 4 mile route or join for the final 2 miles. All participants will have the opportunity to run through Solider Field as we deliver the Flame of Hope to the Eternal Flame ceremony.

Registration for the LETR Commemorative Run is now live. Please visit www.SpecialOlympics50.org and click the Join Us button to register. The run is open to law enforcement, Special Olympics athletes, and the general public. Registration is $75, and all participants will receive an exclusive 50th Anniversary Commemorative Run dry-wick shirt.

LETR Training and Resource Materials Now Available on LETR.ORG

For the past year, the Executive Council of the Law Enforcement Torch Run has been requesting input from all the Torch Run programs seeking best practices in the hopes of helping others build their Law Enforcement Torch run programs. We have finally made this available to everyone via our LETR.org website.

From the Homepage, click on the LETR Resources icon, and then click on the Examples of Best Practice banner. We have divided the page into three categories. “Presentations,” which are just that, PowerPoint presentations that were previously presented at prior conferences. “Documentation provided by Programs” are manuals and procedures from other states on everything Torch Run. “Fundraising” is everything you need to know to increase your fundraising abilities, following other states’ proven plans.

We are also looking for more ‘best practices’ to share, so if you have a knock-out idea for fundraising or a better way of holding a kick-off conference, or anything else you would like to share, please submit it to us.
